Located half way between the Auvergne and the Provence, the Lyonnais and the Cévennes, and dominating the valley of the Ardèche, Aubenas is a crossroads in the department, situated 40 km. from the Rhône Valley, 30 km. from the Ardèche Gorges and 50km from the Ardèche Mountain.
At an altitude of 237 m. and with a population of 11045 AUBENAS is an active commercial centre, making it the capital of Ardèche Meridionale.
Aubenas, ancient feudal city, hosts a 12th -13th century castle with a Renaissance courtyard, a main staircase and glazed tiles with the possibility of a guided tour, a Church with its wooded chancel and its 18th c altarpiece, the dome St Benoît, a former Benedictine Chapel dating back to the 17th c. During the war it was used as corn store which explains the name of the square in front of the dome, "Place de la Grenette".

THE DOME ST-BENOIT :
It is the masterpiece of Aubenas’religious architecture. Formerly, it was the chapel of a convent of Benedictines (17th c.) and is remarkable for its hexagonal shape and its huge 17th c. Dome. During the French Revolution, it was used as a grain storehouse. In 1944 it was listed as an historical monument

 

 

L'église Saint-LaurentSAINT LAURENT’S CHURCH
This church was called Saint Dominique church in the 13th c. With the religious wars, it was destroyed and rebuilt in 1612 on the order of Marie de Medicis. Inside, the woods date back to the 18th c. and come from the ancient Jesuit’s convent. Its chapel which is called chapel Ste Claire (Also called the chapel of the martyrs) dates back to the 15th c. Its façade is however rather recent as it dates back to the 19th c.
